During the months when the vines are dormant, the sheep graze among the rows, bringing a wealth of benefits:

Natural fertilization: Sheep manure is naturally incorporated into the soil, adding nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter. This natural amendment improves soil structure, water retention capacity, and microbiological activity. The result is soil that is livelier, more fertile, and less dependent on external inputs.

Vegetation control: Grazing effectively reduces the growth of spontaneous herbs, especially in early spring and after the first autumn rains. This allows us to avoid the use of herbicides and limit the need for tractors or mowers, which in turn reduces soil compaction and fossil fuel consumption.

Boosting biodiversity: The interaction between livestock and vineyard promotes functional biodiversity. Insects, birds, beneficial fungi, and other organisms find shelter and food in a dynamic and balanced ecosystem. This increase in biodiversity is key to the vineyard’s resilience against climate change and pests.

A closed and sustainable cycle: Grazing enables us to connect the vine with the natural cycle of animals, in a system where waste becomes a resource and everything serves a purpose. It is a clear example of circular agriculture applied to the vineyard—nothing is wasted, and everything is transformed.

This practice is an essential part of our commitment to regenerative agriculture—a philosophy that goes beyond organic. It’s about bringing life back to the soil, strengthening ecosystems, and crafting high-quality wines through deep respect for the land.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="537" data-src="https://perezpascuas.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DJI_0558-1024x537.jpg" alt="Pastoreo de ovejas.
