“The 2020 El Pedrosal, which is sold under the brand Cepa Gavilán, wants to be a balanced, fresh and Atlantic red produced with Tinto Fino. It matured in’ barrel for 12 months and has 14.5% alcohol and good acidity and freshness. The wine introduces the serious and classical wine style with ripeness, austerity and balance with typical rusticity and unusual elegance, a medium to full-bodied palate and fine tannins.”

“The flagship 2020 Viña Pedrosa Crianza is perfumed and has ripe fruit without excess and integrated spiciness and smoke from the élevage in barrel. It fermented with a selection of indigenous yeasts from their older vines and matured in barrel for 18 months. It has notes of peach, ripe berries, flowers and sweet spices, with a mellow palate, fine tannins and a gentle and approachable mouthfeel”.

“The youngest of the two vintages I tasted of the single-vineyard La Navilla, the 2019 Viña Pedrosa La Navilla Reserva was produced with the grapes from the vines that surrounded the winery in the village of Pedrosa de Duero. This has a slightly more modern and more generously oaked profile with spicy and smoky aromas after 20 months in French oak barrels. Despite having similar parameters, this comes from a warm and dry year and shows little riper and headier and has a slightly more rustic personality and abundant tannins.”

“The 2018 Viña Pedrosa La Navilla Reserva shows unusually ripe and heady for a cooler year like 2018. But sometimes in the cooler years the grapes ripen more slowly and more thoroughly and the wines come through as earthier and a little more rustic. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021.”

“Tasted next to a magnum of the 2018, the 2019 Viña Pedrosa Reserva revealed a more classical and balanced profile with better balance and freshness despite having been cropped from a warm and dry vintage. The wine matured in barrique for two years but doesn’t show excessively oaky or ripe, coming through as classically proportioned and powerful, with the elegant rusticity of the zone. It should develop nicely in bottle.”

It has a powerful palate with abundant but fine-grained and polished tannins after having spent two years in barrel and another couple of years in bottle.”

“The brownish and orange color of the rim gives away the extra age and longer élevage of the fresh and harmonious 2016 Pérez Pascuas Gran Reserva, a special selection that’s not produced every year. 2016 was a classical vintage, one of the finest in recent years and quite apt for producing wines with a longer élevage (26 months in barrel) and good aging potential. It has complexity, elegance and a very harmonious palate with velvety tannins, pungent flavors and great persistence— textbook Gran Reserva Ribera del Duero as I understand it.”
