Viña Pedrosa El Otero: Our First Organic Wine

At Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas, we believe that wine is the most honest reflection of the land. That is why today we proudly present the release of Viña Pedrosa El Otero 2023, our first organic and vegan wine, the result of years of dedication and deep respect for the vineyard.

A Origin Bound to the Land

El Otero comes from one of our highest vineyards, located at 870 meters above sea level, where the vines find a natural balance with the clay soils and the extreme climate of the Ribera del Duero.
With an average age of more than 22 years, these traditional bush vines —grafted from massal selections of our oldest vineyards— have been cultivated organically since 2019, now reaching this first certification milestone.

Tasting Note

Viña Pedrosa El Otero 2023 displays a deep cherry-red color with violet hues.
On the nose, roasted notes of coffee and cocoa stand out, perfectly integrated with ripe black and red fruit, accompanied by subtle spicy hints of pepper, clove, and licorice.

On the palate, the blend of varieties brings complexity and elegance, with silky tannins and a harmonious balance between the freshness of the fruit and the toasted character of the oak ageing. The finish is long and refined.

Vintage 2023

Rated as very good, the 2023 vintage was marked by a mild winter, with few days of temperatures below zero, and dry conditions, with scarce rainfall in the form of rain and snow. This led to an early budbreak and a phenological cycle that developed without incidents.

Spring and summer were hot and dry, with a heatwave at the end of August and an early veraison. Rainfall arrived in June, contributing to the proper development of the grapes; thanks to the excellent vineyard management throughout the year, there were no sanitary problems in the vines.

At the beginning of September, heavy rainfall returned. In the case of Viña Pedrosa, thanks to cover crops, the vineyard managed the water very well, allowing grapes to be harvested parcel by parcel at the optimal moment and preventing soil erosion.

These cover crops were key to carrying out the harvest on the scheduled dates. Harvest began on September 22 in sandy-soil plots and finished on October 10. Once again, the importance of bush vines, old vineyards, and altitude was evident — all perfectly integrated within an organic and regenerative viticulture. This allowed us to harvest grapes of the highest quality in what was a climatically challenging year in Ribera del Duero.

The 2023 vintage was therefore excellent and generous for Bodegas Hnos. Pérez Pascuas, being the first harvest officially certified as organic. It is worth noting that since 2019, Viña Pedrosa has been cultivating its family vineyards organically.
