Once again, the Master of Wine Tim Atkin has tasted and rated our wines, including the current vintages of Cepa Gavilán and Viña Pedrosa Crianza (2021), and Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva 2018, as well as some future vintages that will be soon on the market: Viña Pedrosa La Navilla Reserva 2020, Viña Pedrosa Reserva 2020 and Pérez Pascuas Gran Selección 2018 (Gran Reserva).

These are the scores and comments on the wines:

EL PEDROSAL CRIANZA -CEPA GAVILÁN CRIANZA 2021

The 2021 El Pedrosal Crianza, sold in some markets as Cepa Gavilán Crianza, is a classical Crianza made from 100% Tempranillo, with good ripeness and 14.5% alcohol but showing the brightness and freshness of the year. They age it in used French and American oak barrels for 12 months looking for the balance between fruit and oak. It fermented by vineyard with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. It has a soft texture and tender tannins.
235,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022.

VIÑA PEDROSA CRIANZA 2021

A textbook example of the category, the 2021 Viña Pedrosa Crianza shows riper fruit, darker than the El Pedrosal Crianza but also more complexity and
depth. It has similar parameters, with 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.44, reflecting the freshness of the year. It has berry fruit, herbs and flowers with peppery and spicy notes. The palate is medium-bodied and the tannins fine
and elegant. It should age nicely in bottle.

320,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

VIÑA PEDROSA LA NAVILLA RESERVA 2020

The higher ripeness and the warmer season are immediately evident on the nose of the 2020 Viña Pedrosa La Navilla Reserva, which reveals notes of candied dark berries and some spicy creaminess from the 20 months it spent in French barriques, along with some ashy notes of incense. The fruit on the palate was not as bright as it was in the wines from 2021, and the tannins are more noticeable and not as coated by the fruit.

It was bottled in September 2022.

VIÑA PEDROSA RESERVA 2020

There are some notes of candied fruit in the 2020 Viña Pedrosa Reserva, reflecting a warmer year despite the very similar parameters, the 14.6% alcohol and pH of 3.5. It is faintly riper, with notes of cigar ash and incense, sweet spices and cedar wood. The palate is round and voluptuous, with fine-grained tannins. This matured in French and American oak barrels for 24 months.

VIÑA PEDROSA GRAN RESERVA 2018

There is an herbal quality on the nose of the 2018 Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva that denotes freshness and a cooler year. It’s a vintage with more restraint, contained ripeness and a more streamlined and elegant palate. The wine
is harmonious, with the character and rusticity of the place but with harmony and balance, which provide the elegance.

PÉREZ PASCUAS GRAN SELECCIÓN – GRAN RESERVA 2017

2017 was a very challenging year with killer frost, and the 2017 Pérez Pascuas Gran Reserva seems to be aging at a faster pace. It shows some brown color and a tertiary nose of tobacco, forest floor and brick dust. It has
a polished palate with some earthy dustiness and a dry, chalky finish. This matured in French and American oak barrels for 26 months and was kept in bottle for no less than three years. It’s ready to be drunk now.

2,340 bottles were filled in March 2020.
