Once again, the Master of Wine Tim Atkin has tasted and rated our wines, including the current vintages of Cepa Gavilán and Viña Pedrosa Crianza (2021), and Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva 2018, as well as some future vintages that will be soon on the market: Viña Pedrosa La Navilla Reserva 2020, Viña Pedrosa Reserva 2020 and Pérez Pascuas Gran Selección 2018 (Gran Reserva).
These are the scores and comments on the wines:
Showing the structure and low pH that seem to come with the terroir of the Finca El Otero, sited at 890 metres in Pedrosa de Duero, Cepa Gavilán is a
very impressive entry-point red from Pérez Pascuas. Dense, structured yet refreshing, it has scented American and 40% French oak, bramble, damson
and liquorice flavours, sinewy tannins and a tapering finish.
Finca Valdegollada, located on clay soils at 840 metres in Pedrosa de Duero,
is the source of this organically farmed Tinto Fino. Showing some balsamic top notes, it has sweetly integrated French and American oak, perfumed
Asian spices, bramble, raspberry and black cherry fruit and the freshness and structure that are hallmarks of the Viña Pedrosa style.
VIÑA PEDROSA LA NAVILLA RESERVA 2020
Finca La Navilla is located on sandy soils – the pine trees in the vineyard are a giveaway – and is one of the more “elegant” wines in the Viña Pedrosa range, according to Nuria Peña Albillo.
It’s still pretty concentrated, sturdy stuff, mind you, with toast and vanilla spice aromas, damson and blackberry fruit, 50% new French oak and a tannic backbone.
.
It’s almost a crime to open a wine like this Reserva in its youth, such is its concentration and ageing potential, so keep your hands off the nearest corkscrew.
Made with Tinto Fino from the Finca Prado El Carril at 843 metres, it has amazing concentration, energy and intensity, with blackcurrant, blueberry and damson flavours, lots of spicy French and American oak and a core of tannins.
VIÑA PEDROSA GRAN RESERVA 2018
The Viña Pedrosa Gran Reserva showcases Tinto Fino grapes from three different plots – Carraguzmán, Cerro Viejo and Fuentenogal – with ageing in an equal mix of 50% new French and American wood. Made to age in bottle, it’s floral, structured and intense, with a carapace of tannins, lots of supporting acidity, red berry and black cherry fruit, patisserie spice oak and a balsamic undertone.

PÉREZ PASCUAS GRAN SELECCIÓN – GRAN RESERVA 2018
The marquee wine from Pérez Pascuas hails from the clay and limestone soils of the FincaValtarreña, located at 838 metres in Pedrosa de Duero. Matured in an equal combination of French and American barrels, 60% of them new, this is a Tinto Fino that will age gracefully in bottle, but is starting to open up now, with some savoury, balsamic undertones, dense blackberry and liquorice flavours and a chalky finish.
